In October 2018, Charlatte Manutention, a Fayat Road Equipment division subsidiary, and NAVYA, a leading French autonomous driving systems manufacturer, created Charlatte Autonom to develop autonomous tractor solutions for industrial and airport sites.
Charlatte Autonom combines the recognised quality and performance of the Charlatte Manutention T135 electric baggage tractor, the highest-selling machine on the market with more than 20,000 in use worldwide and a leading position on the global market, with NAVYA’s unique autonomous vehicle expertise.
The vehicle is equipped with a set of Navya-specific sensors, enabling the tractor to determine its location in real time on a pre-saved 3D map of the environment. The virtual driver algorithm combines GPS position, 3D Lidar sensors, and camera views of the infrastructure surrounding the tractor, and self-monitoring of the vehicle using odometry sensors and an inertial measurement unit. Detection sensors are also used to detect obstacles, and the virtual driver reacts to these readings, stopping or slowing the tractor as it continues on its trajectory.
Since 15 November, a Charlatte Autonom subsidiary autonomous vehicle has been in use between baggage sorting areas and aircraft: the AUTONOM TRACT AT135.
