The purpose of this infrastructure is to sharply cut back the discharge of wastewater into the Seine during rainy spells: thanks to this improvement, the quality of the water should be sufficient to allow swimming in the river in 2024, the year of the Olympics. Work started in July and is scheduled to last 44 months for the creation of a storage basin of 46,000 m3 upstream from the Pont d’Austerlitz, of two water intakes (left bank and right bank), and of a collector sewer drilled using a micro-tunnelling machine over a distance of 625 metres.
